The 2017-18 Fall TV season is upon us and there are a slew of new and returning shows. But which new shows should you be watching? I had the opportunity to watch ABCs upcoming new drama, The Good Doctor, a remake of the South Korean medical drama of the same name.
The Good Doctor is sure to be well received; however, since its on ABC (the Already Been Canceled Network), I have a feeling that just like with Conviction, Notorious, and Time After Time, I will again, become invested in a show that will never be given a chance to build an audience.
The show stars Freddie Highmore, best known as Norman Bates in A&Es Bates Motel, as Dr. Shaun Murphy, a young surgeon diagnosed with autism and savant syndrome who has been hired to work at the San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital.
Dont worry, this isnt Doogie Howser, M.D. 2.0. The Good Doctor is a well written drama, and based on my experience with high functioning autistic people, Highmore captures the essence of Shaun Murphy perfectly.
Maybe my own life experiences with discrimination places an extreme bias on my opinion of this show’s question of should a person’s disability (physical or mental) prevent them from reaching for success?
Lets hope ABC keeps this show. Lets hope it has a large following. This show, in my opinion, will answer that question. It will be a show that wont make fun of a persons disabilities, rather this show will bring these medical concerns to the light of day. Viewers will be able to watch and learn. Maybe this will be the show that will open the door to discussions between those afflicted with whatever and those who have no medical problem. We shall see.
The Good Doctor premieres on Monday, September 25 at 10/9c
