When the closed beta for Tom Clancy’s The Division began, I was beside myself with excitement. From the moment I saw that first video at E3, The Division was THE game I had been waiting for (second only to Fallout 4); since I had missed the alpha, there was NO way I was going to miss the beta.
And then I started playing. Literally, I was playing from the very minute the beta was open; and yet when I hit the Dark Zone 30 minutes later, I was getting my ass handed to me. Every time I went up against someone in the Dark Zone, they were 3 or 4 levels above me with better guns and abilities. Even finding out about Dark Zone cheaters didn’t help bring back the excitement I experienced watching Ubisoft’s E3 trailer.
Venturing back outside the Dark Zone, I quickly realized there was nothing to do. The “grind” of leveling your player in a good MMO isn’t there. After an hour or so, it just became repetitive. There’s very little, if any, variety in the game play. Seriously, even World of Warcraft, which I dislike, does not come down to solely, “go to this location, clear the area of enemies, then move on to another location,” gameplay.
Ubisoft could have done so much more with The Division. Honestly, I thought it would be more a mix of Rainbow Six meets Fallout meets Destiny meets Grand Theft Auto.
Maybe I’m just asking for too much in a video game, or not. Either way, when The Division releases March 8, I won’t be picking it up.
